Winter Stones [ 1 ]

Losing both parents at the end of your senior year? Yeah. That sucks. What sucks even more is the fact they'd just divorced about two years ago, and I hadn't seen my mother since it was made final. When she moved back to Montana where she grew up, fell back in love with her old high school sweet heart.

I felt guilty that I didn't go to visit when she asked. But I didn't want to meet Reed, her new husband, and I didn't want to meet his three sons either. I didnt want to meet her new family. We were her family.

She died in a car accident in January, my father died of Cancer two days after I graduated.

I moved in with my last family member , my fathers mom, my grandma. She died, two weeks ago.

I had no money, and nowhere to go. My friends mother let me stay with them until after I could go to her funeral.

Until I got a phone call from Reed. My dead mothers most recent husband.

He told me he heard the news. Apparently my mother told him about the fact we didnt have much of a family as far as relatives go, both her and my dad were an only child. He asked me if I had anywhere to go. No. I told him. I told him no again when he offered to by me a plane ticket to come stay with him and his boys until I figured something out, and that I was welcome to stay as long as I needed or wanted.  I declined.

Less than 48 hours later though , I was packing my shit, and leaving everything behind. My small group of friends were the only people I had, and they were all away at colleges, I had no reason to stay, I had no money to stay.

Reed paid for me to have most of my stuff shipped, but I brought two suitcases with me on the plane.

When I grabbed my suitcases and went out front, there was Reed, I knew sort of what he looked like, but there was no mistaking it was him by the way he was looking at me.

I looked just like my mother. Except for the hair. My hair was blonde almost white on top, and faded into a light blue, then a darker blue at the end.

Reed smiles as I shrug and walk over to him rolling my suitcases.

"Hey Ariella" he said, his face looking like he's bursting with I'm sorry's and it'll be okay...time heals bullshit.

"Hey Reed" I say awkwardly and stop with my suitcases.

He's taller than I thought, to my 5'7" he's probably 6'2" or so.

"Is it okay if I hug you?" he asks.

I swivel my lips to the side of my face and shrug. "Sure, why not" I say and step forward and before I can even open my arms, Reed pulls me to his chest.

"I'm so sorry Ariella" he says. There it is. I think to myself as he just hugs me, my arms pinned to my side, I lift my one hand and pat his back awkwardly.

"Thanks Reed." I say unsure of what I should say.

After a few more awkward moments of this, he finally pulls back, grabs my shoulders and takes a good look at me.

"You look just like her, even more so in person...spitting image" he says shaking his head. I give a little uncomfortable smile. I nod.

"Yeah. That's what everyone says. " I shrug.

He lets out a sigh and still looks at me, studying my face as if he stares long enough I'll start speaking in my mothers voice. It's weird, So fucking weird, and I wonder if I've made a mistake coming here.

"Well, let's get on the road." he says. "I'm sure you're tired and want to lay down."  he says and I sigh and nod.

"Yeah" I say, as he puts my suitcase into the back of the pickup and opens my door for me letting me in.

The airport is an hour from where Reed lives, but thankfully it doesn't take long for Reed to make me feel comfortable. I realize how easy it is to talk to him, and soon feel guilty that I refused to come visit my mom and meet him sooner, while she was still here.

He tells me about the boys, which I've refused to ever even search for them. Asher Stone, his oldest is 23, he warns me that he's not as social as the other two, he tells me he's the strong and silent type.

Westlan Stone is the second one, the middle boy, who is 20.  Calls him a ladies man, and a lot more outgoing than his older brother.

Cade Stone is the youngest, the same age as me...18. He says Cade lies somewhere in the middle, he's shy and silent, but outgoing once you get to know him.

"They know I'm coming right?" I say chewing my lip.

Reed laughs. "Yes Ariella" they do.

"They won't be there when we get there though, they're out shopping to stock up for winter." he says.

"Stock up on what?" I ask, pulling my jacket closed, watching the snowflakes lightly falling, not enough to stick.

Reed laughs. "Oh, everything. Most winters we're stuck up there all winter long"

"Huh?" I say and sit up straighter in my seat.

"In the house..." he said and looks to me.

"Your mother never told you?" Reed cocks a brow and his head and looks back to the road.

"I barely talked to her once she moved here." I say.

Reed sighs. I do too a little. Regretting punishing her for so long.

"Well, the winters get pretty bad on the mountain and all around....the plows don't come up where we are, so we're pretty much stuck there until the snow melts. Sure we can try to drive through just a few inches, but when it doesnt get plowed, it adds up and up and becomes impassible.

"So....what you're saying is.....I'll be stuck on a mountain all winter?" I ask.

Reed chuckles. "Sorry Ariella, I honestly thought you knew how it was , but yes...that's pretty much how it is. Not much cell service either." he says warily, to gauge my reaction.

"How much is ...not much?" I ask.

".....uh...none really." he says.

"Oh Reed" I shake my head. "Tell me you're joking" I say.

He sucks air through his teeth and winces shaking his head in an apologetic way.

"Sorry to say....i'm not." he says.

I sink into my seat.

"What do you....even do for that long?" I ask.

Reed laughs. "We have chores to occupy us, we work on our bikes, or the trucks. " He shrugs. "Build some stuff in the wood shop" he lists a few more other things.

"So, no tv?" I ask.

Reed laughs. "We have a lot of DVD's, even if we could get a good service running all the way up there, we don't watch much tv." he says.

Suddenly I'm thankful for the fact I have my boxes being shipped, which hold my vibrators. Which I'm sure I'll need this winter, and wonder how suspicious it would be to stock up on a bulk set of batteries.

"You have power right?" I ask wondering how far this apocalyptic living goes.

He laughs. "Yes, and generators, if the power does happen to go out." he laughs.

"Plumbing?" I ask.

He chuckles again. "Yes ma'am, we have working plumbing."

"Thank goodness" I say with a sigh of relief.

When we're closer to the house, he tells me that he or one of the boys will take me into town, to grab anything I might want to stock up on.

"Not just...lady things.." he says uncomfortably and I laugh slightly. "But anything you want. Food, snacks, shampoo, soap, magazines, books. Anything you want. I recommend getting some long johns, cause even though we have heat, it still can get pretty cold up there, specially at night" he says. I nod.

"Long johns, noted...first thing on my list." I say, Reed chuckles.

"Thanks for letting me come stay Reed." I say. "I'm not sure i'll survive without the wifi...but..I appreciate you...you know...letting me come here." I say.

He laughs at the wifi comment but nods.

"I'd do anything for your momma and hers. You were her biggest accomplishment, what she was most proud of.." he says and I feel tears prick my eyes.

"Not now Reed" I say, taking a deep breath, and shake my head.

He just nods. "I understand. I'm here if you ever need anything alright?" he says and I nod and give him a grateful smile.

"Thanks Reed" I say.

He nods and then points to a road coming up.

"Now this road here.....we'll drive about 10-15 minutes on, there's a couple houses here on the lower parts, but this road will take us up the mountain , home. " he says and I nod.

"Plows down come no further than these few houses down here." he says and I nod.

The road up is bumpy, all gravel and bounces Reed and me in our seats.

He talks the whole way up, pointing out at the markers along the road that tell you how far you are along the road to their house.

We pull up to the house. Their driveway is as large as the house and woodshop and garage to the side of the house, all gravel. A few cars are parked randomly to the side, and a motorcycle.

"Wow, your house is....really nice Reed" I say looking up at the huge log cabin.

The base is stone, with a regular garage built in. Reed watches me look at it in awe.

"Ya got the regular garage...and along here" he points to more stone work the runs along the base, behind there, theres a gym that the boys use.

"I stay on the main floor in the master room, the boys all have rooms on the second level." He points up to the second level, which is the main floor and third level which he calls the second. I nod.

"Well cmon and I'll show ya around" he says and I follow him as he carries my suitcases lifting them up the stone steps that wrap along the side of the house, leading to the wrap around porch the circles the massive cabin, and then seconds later I'm inside and my eyes go wide, at how high the ceiling is, and how gorgeous the wood is inside, and the huge wooden beams running across.

"I'll show you your room, it's on the second floor, but don't worry I put ya on the other end away from the boys, so they don't annoy the piss out of you." he says and I laugh and nod.

"I'm sure they'll be fine, but thank you" I say with a laugh, and when we get to the second floor , going left leads to what I can tell is the hall of the boys bedrooms, because there are several doors. But the way Reed is taking me just has one, that's straight ahead.

Reed opens the door and I'm blinded by the sun shining right through my window.

I gasp after I quint and reopen my eyes.

The room I have is incredible.

"This is ...my..room?" I ask stepping inside and walking over to the wall of windows in front of me with the light pouring in.

I can see over the trees and down the mountain, and where the mountain starts to go up again into another peak.

"Sure is. You like it?" Reed asks.

I nod silently and look out my window and think of how peaceful it looks, how beautiful.

"It's perfect." I say, and turn and give a smile to reed.

"Thank you." I say.

"You're very welcome. Ariella." he says.

"Closets here, you have your own bathroom here...it's not anything fancy, just a stand up shower , toilet and mirror, but we have a bath tub in the shared bathroom, I don't know if you take bubble baths or any of that stuff" he shrugs.

I give a little laugh. "Sometimes."

"Welp, bathroom was the first door ahead of you when you come right up the stairs.  The boys use that, I have my own bathroom like yours downstairs." he says and I nod. I look over at the bed.

It's at least a king sized bed, with a large white comforter that looks like a cloud, and probably a dozen pillows.

There's a vanity against one wall with several drawers and mirror with lights.

"you didn't buy all this did you?" I ask uncomfortably.

"A few things I did, yes...but please don't feel awkward about it....it was nothing....I'm not hurting for cash...I just wanted you to feel comfortable.

I smile. "Thanks Reed."

He nods. "You're welcome."

"Westlan picked out the vanity." he says and I smile.

"It's nice. Really nice. I'll be sure to thank him." I say.

"Well, I'm going to go start getting dinner ready....if you need anything...let me know." he says.

"Tomorrow we'll go into town, I had your boxes shipped overnight, so they'll be here in the afternoon and we'll pick them up. But think of anything else you might need or want, make a list, and don't be shy either. Whatever you need Ariella. " he says and I nod.

I walk over, and this time I'm the one that wraps my arms around him, and hugs him tight, so tight I might cry. He lifts his arms and I slide mine around his torso instead and bury my head against his chest, he holds my head as the appreciative , overwhelmed tears fill my eyes and stream down my cheeks.

"thank you so much" my voice cracks and he hushes me.

"You're welcome....and just get yourself situated, take a nap if you need. I'll have one of the boys wake you for dinner." he says. I nod , and with a gentle smile , Reed leaves my room shutting the door. I go back to my wall of windows and peer out. Missing my dad, missing my mom. Missing my grandma. I sigh, pulling off my winter coat and zip up jacket beneath it. I kick off my sneakers, pull off my pants and socks. I get into bed, and decide I can unpack later, that I'm too exhausted to do anything but sleep.
