Kate Carter
It was not at all fair that my parents decided to put this "clause" or whatever the fuck you called it into my inheritance. I was supposed to gain my inheritance at 21. I figured I could convince my father to give it to me anyways, and if not, I was just fine living at home, with credit cards with an infinite limit and housekeepers and being spoiled. However they caught on, and essentially I've been kicked out. Given a small amount of money to get me started, here in a small podunk town in Washington that my father grew up in before he moved to Los Angeles.
I'd grown up in sunshine, warm weather and beaches and city lights and loud noises. Now here I was, standing outside of an apartment building , with nobody at the door to hold it open or help me with my suitcases that the cab driver just set on the curb.
I made a disgruntled face up at the building, blaming it for my current situation. Glaring at it, as if it was smiting me. I stuck my tongue out at the building. I huffed and then bent over to pick up my one suit case and start hauling it up the short set of steps when the front door opened. I turned my head with hope that I was wrong and they indeed did have a doorman.
"Oh perfect!" I exclaimed as a man in jeans and a plaid shirt opened the door. I mean he wasn't dressed like a door man, but I guess things were more lax around here.
His eyebrow quirked.
"I only have these suitcases, and the smaller one. I'm in apartment 304." I say and he tilts his head to the side, his brows pulling together.
"Um congratulations?" he says sounding unsure.
I too draw my brows together and then gesture to the suitcases.
"Just these three." I say. "Apartment 304." and then heave a sigh of relief and start to walk up the steps and he watches me. I give a polite smile and nod and walk into the door and scrunch my nose at the stuffyness of the building.
When I turn, I see that the guy is not there, and peeking back out the glass I see he's walking across the street.
"Hey!" I yell swinging the front door to the apartment building open.
He turns in the middle of the empty street.
"Yeah?" he asks.
I gesture to the suitcases.
He gives a little chuckle and tucks his hands back into his pockets and looks at me as he walks back to the curb.
"Lady....do you think I'm a door man?" he asks and I jerk my head back.
"Well....I mean....yes." I say.
He laughs and steps up onto the sidewalk.
"I ain't a door man lady." he says and I sigh.
He gives me a little chuckle and looks me up and down, not in a predatory way, but I'd almost prefer it to the judgy look I'm getting.
"How do you walk in those things?" he says nodding to my black Louboutins, one of the few pairs of shoes I was able to bring, already sad at the reminder I had to leave over 100 pairs of designer heels to sit all alone in my closet, without me to stare at them everyday adoringly.
"One foot in front of the other." I say and he smirks, his eyes going back up over my designer light wash skinny jeans and my cream colored cashmere long sleeved sweater.
"Where you from?" he asks stepping further towards my suitcases.
"Los Angeles." I say and he laughs.
"Yeah, you're lost lady" he says and I put a hand on my hip.
"Yeah, tell me about it." I say and he smirks.
"My name is Brian." he says.
"Congratulations" I say with a playful amount of sass, repeating his words back to him.
He laughs.
"I'm Kate" I say.
He nods , still laughing. "Nice to meet you Kate, from Los Angeles."
I look at him.
"So you're not a doorman?" I ask and he laughs and shakes his head.
"Nope" he replies.
"Well can I interest you in helping me anyways, I could give you lessons on how to walk in heels if you'd like." I say and he laughs a bit more. He's a cute guy, probably the same age as me, but he's not flirting at all, just being friendly. He doesn't look at me like guys do when they want me on my back.
"I suppose I can assist." he says. "No lessons needed, you'll just owe me."
"Oh wonderful, the anticipation of what you'll cash in the favor for excites me" I say give a fake thrilled expression of glee as I clasp my hands together.
"Also.." he says as he grabs the suit cases easily and hauls them up. "Do me a favor....don't go telling random men your apartment number, yeah? " he says and I roll my eyes and hold the door open as he brings them in.
"I thought you were the doorman!" I argue and he laughs.
"Did you bring a babysitter with you? " he asks and give him a glare as I punch the button on the elevator for the third floor.
"no, I don't need one." I say and he smiles.
"You sure?" he teases.
"Why, what's your babysitting rate?" I ask crossing my arms. He gives a full laugh and then looks at me.
"What are you doing later?" he asks.
I jerk my head back. "Wait....are you flirting with me?" I ask, confused, I can usually read men easily, and he did not give off those vibes.
He laughs and shakes his head. "No, my apologies...I just meant to invite you to the bar me and my friends hang out at, and my girlfriend." he says clearly and I smile.
"Oh okay." I say and nod.
"I think my friends would get a kick out of you." he says and I look at him and cock my brow.
"Oh, so I'd be a little trick pony? Entertain your friends with the Los Angeles air head?" I say with a slight laugh and he stops in the hall after exiting, pausing at my words and turning to look.
"Not at all." he shakes his head and he looks offended and I blush in embarrassment.
"You're just funny, and have wit...and the cluelessness IS a bit amusing, and a little adorable honestly, but no, I wasn't inviting you to laugh at you." he says and I smile.
I give a nod and a deep breath.
"My parents sent me here, because they think i'm an air head, I'm projecting. Sorry." I apologize and he gives a half smile, the other half pity.
"So not here by choice then huh?" he asks as he walks to room 304.
I shake my head. "Nope." I say poppping the end of the word as I push the key into the lock and open the door.
"Parents sent me to survive in the "Real world"" I say using air quotes. "For a whole year, before I can get my inheritance.
"Well this will be an adventure then, yeah?" he says smiling optimistically and I huff a laugh.
"Oh, im sure it will be." I say and step further in and flick on the apartment lights and shiver at the coldness of the apartment.
"what the hell" I say flicking the lights again, then walking in and flicking another set.
To the right is a small kitchen and dining area, then a small living area, and then a bathroom and a bedroom. The lights in the bedroom work, and the only thing in the bedroom is a twin sized mattress on plain wooden bedframe. Thanks Dad I groan rolling my eyes.
"I'll furnish it with what you need" he told me. Which was apparently , just a bed. The living area had been empty, and there was a small table in the dining area and that was it.
"Probably just need to change the light bulbs" Brian said.
"Yeah, guess I'll have to make a list." I say.
"I have a few." he says.
I shake my head. "Don't worry about it, I'm sure I'll have to head to the store for quite a bit it looks like." I say gesturing around.
He laughs. "Yeah, it looks that way. "
"Well thanks for helping me carry those up, just know that the expiration date to cash in a return favor only last 24 hours" I tease and he laughs.
"Well, I'll cash in, and you can come out with us later." he says.
I look around. "I have a lot to do."
"Bah" he waves his head. "Come out, have some fun, meet some people." he says and I chew my lips and debate it. I was good at partying and socializing. I was good at making friends. Because while I might have been spoiled, I wasn't a bitch. At least not intentionally.
"Alright" I say. He smiles and nods.
"Cool, I'll pick you up here at 9 with my girlfriend Kaylee" he says and nod and smile.
"Sounds great" I say with a nod.
"Is there a dress code?" I ask hopefully. I loved fancy clubs. He laughs.
"yeah" he says and I smile wide eyed.
"an outfit with sneakers" he teases with a smile and salutes me and leaves.
