“Are you really going to work there?” Sunny asks from across the high bar table as we drink our half priced fruity drinks.
“I mean, yeah ? Why wouldn’t I? The pay is ridiculous and it’s just a secretary job.” I answer as I then take a sip from my straw.
“But it’s like…a sex club” she says.
I roll my eyes. “And?”
“And you’re…well….cmon Kat” she says her eyes rolling as well.
“I’m what?” I cock a brow.
“Not exactly the kind of girl who works at a sex club” she says.
I shrug. “It’s not like I’m working there as a …whatever…I’m just a secretary.” I argue.
“Okayyyyy but still. You’re the most innocent person I know. Don’t you think it’s a bit out of your comfort zone?” She asks.
“Doing paper work and answering phones? Not really.” I argue.
She sighs. “You know what I mean.”
“Listen…if we’re gonna afford our apartment then I need this job.” I say.
“I’ve told you” Sunny says. “You don’t need to pay me. Daddy’s guilt money pays for it.” She smiles.
I roll my eyes and laugh.
Sunny was my best friend, and spoiled our entire lives. While my family was comfortable financially. We didn’t often have extra money for things like horse back riding lessons, or summer camp, or vacations to tropical places.
Sunnys parents though had money for that and more. And she’s been paying my way my entire life. With the excuse that she’s allowed to pay because she’s the one asking me to go.
Her parents paid for us to go to summer camp together every year growing up. Paid for me to take horse back riding lessons with her. Ballet lessons. Everything we did. Was paid for by her father. Including the apartment we’ve been living in for six months while I worked as a barista. While I loved my job, it wasn’t paying the bills. Even the ones that were just mine. I had college debt. I had my phone bill. Credit card bills. A car I was still paying off that was a piece of shit. Barista money wasn’t working for me.
“I’ll be fine” I say and she shrugs.
“If you say so love” she shrugs and I can’t help but smile at her nickname for me.

“Call me when you’re out babe” Devin says as he slaps my ass in the morning as I get into my car.
“Yeah” I laugh. “I will”
Devin and I had been together for eight months and I was what Sunny calls , blinded by love, and ignoring red flags like I was a deaf and blind Helen Keller.
Was Devin perfect? No. But who was?
Did he make me happy? Sometimes.
Was he sometimes a jerk ? Yes.
Did he make me cry sometimes? Yes.
But was he also the guy I lost my virginity to, and had fallen in love head over heels the second I did? Yup.
I was twenty one when we started dating in college. And now I was twenty two. Only having slept with one guy. Which Sunny again would say was a tragedy.
But I didn’t have many other relationships before Devin. So I really had nothing to measure him up to.
I thought it was normal for him to show up late to plans, or only come over past midnight and want to go to clubs with the guys without me.
I thought it was normal that we’d been together eight months and I’ve yet to meet his parents.

Walking into my new job is a bit much. I won’t tell Sunny she was right. I refuse to tell
Sunny she was right when I walk in and am met with a large dark club. With higher than hell stripper poles and booths upon booths with their own designated stripper poles.
“Bedrooms” line the walls. Which are large round beds with see through drapes that hang around them. I swallow and before I can turn and run I’m met by a man. The one I interviewed with.
“Katherine, you came.” He says with his mega watt smile. Max Felton was tall and handsome and had a clean shaven face and was wearing a suit that looked even more expensive than the last one I saw him in.
“Yeah, Mister Felton , hi” I say.
“Please. It’s Max.” He says and gestures me into the club.
There weren’t very many people inside. It was mid day , but my eyes caught on one of the “bedrooms” where a man sat on the edge of the bed. A fully clothed woman on her knees in front of him as the man spoke to her his hand caressing her face.
I felt my heart rate speed and my toes squirmed in my heels.
The man too wore a suit. His hair was short and grey and his smile was sweet as he admired the woman in front of him. He was stunning. Much older than any man I’d ever found myself wiggling my toes over.
He looks up and catches me staring. His silver eyes catching mine and making me take a sharp breath and looking away immediately. My cheeks flushing hot as I continue to follow Max. My tongue licks my teeth as I think about the sharp jaw of the man that just caught playing peeping Tom on him.
“It’s okay to look.” Max says.
“I..I’m sorry?” I ask as I follow him into the back.
“That’s Duke, well, his name is Verrick. Middle name is Duke. Verrick Chamberlain. He’s one of my partners who own the club.” He says and I stop walking. My eyes blinking as I try to picture the face I just saw and compare it to Devins. My heart rate sky rockets.
“Does he um, does he have a son ?” I ask.
Max turns his head and gives me a questioning look.
“Why?” He asks.
“Oh, sorry, I just, he looks like this guy I know.” I say. “Same last name.”
“Would it happen to be Devin?” Max asks and I stop again. Fuck.
“Uh. Yeah actually.” I say.
Max smiles. “Yes. That’s his son.”
I swallow and keep the information that I was dating said owners son to myself. Because I wasn’t sure if that would make me working here a conflict and I really needed this money.
“I’ll show you around. Introduce you to the partners as well as the staff that is currently on site.” Max says and I nod.
“Great” I say with a smile.
“You know. I really didn’t think you’d show up Katherine” he says.
“It’s Kat. People call me Kat.” I say. And he smiles and nods.
“Kat” he says.
“And why is that?” I ask.
He smiles as he opens the door to an office and lets me in.
“Well , no offense, you just seem incredibly….” He says with a smile. “Innocent.”
I flush red and shrug.
“Well. I suppose if I were being hired to be a part of..Um…the regular staff. It’d be different. But I think I can manage secretary work.” I say. And he laughs.
“Yes. I suppose you can.”
