Tessa Rae
The guys must have cleared out with all the sounds coming from the bathroom. Maverick was in grumpy mood and mad at me , as if it it didn't take two. But I can't lie to myself, angry Maverick is kind of a turn on.
When we walk out of the cabin, only the new guy is hanging around, right ooutside, sitting on a chair, whittling a piece of wood.
"Hey Ry" I say when he lifts his head.
"Hey Tessa." He says and Maverick growls ever so slightly.
"I gotta get to work." Maverick says. "So do you." he says to Ryder.
"Waitin on the guys, said we're building a fence up at twelve." Ryder says and Maverick nods.
I sit down in the chair beside Ryder. "What are you making?" I ask and Maverick shifts , and I don't even have to look up at him to know that he doesn't want me talking to the guy. But clearly if he went on a "mission" with Maverick yesterday, they clearly trust him enough, or trust him now after the fact, and that he'll be here for a while, and I can't just ignore the guy forever.
"An owl." He says and I crook my head, trying to make out the shape of the small piece of wood in his hand.
"An owl, huh?" I ask of the demented carving in his hand.
He lifts his head and fights a little smile as he looks at me.
"It's a new hobby..something to do...dont make fun." He says and I laugh.
"Mac!" My fathers voice yells from the main house , all of heads turning and I squint my eyes against the sun.
"Get your ass up here boy." My dad says, and I laugh softly, because anyone younger than my dad was "boy". Even though Maverick was a thirty year old man.
"You coming Tessa Rae?" Maverick asks and I shrug.
"I'm good." I say.
"No, you're coming with me." He says and I cock my brow. I didn't like being told what to do, but I also didn't want to embarrass Maverick in front of a guy that was supposed to follow his orders.
"I aint gonna touch her." Ryder says and Maverick's nostrils flare.
"Damn right you're not." He says.
"Tessa Rae, let's go." he huffs and his eyes glare at me. Because okay, I suppose I did promise him I'd stay away from the new guy till he trusted him.
"Only because I need to change. NOT because you're tellin me to." I say and push up out of my seat and Maverick grumbles.
"See ya Ry, good luck with your....what's it again?" I tease and he laughs.
"Funny." He says. "real funny Tessa"
I laugh, and then walk to Maverick who's glaring at me and I roll my eyes.
"Calm down tough guy." I whisper.
"Flirt with him again Tessa Rae, and see what happens." Maverick says.
"Ooooo, I'm shaking Big Mac, what are you gonna do to me? Not a thing, so don't you threaten me big guy." I say and he huffs.
"Not you im threatening." He growls, walking, stomping his big ole fuckin boots and I skip a couple steps to keep stride with him.
"And I wasnt flirting, I was just being friendly, he works here Maverick." I say.
"He doesnt know that, none of them fuckin know that, anytime you speak to them they all get distracted for the rest of the god damn day."
"Jealous?" I ask.
"Shut your mouth Tessa Rae" he huffs.
"Make me you big jerk." I say and he stops and I smile up at him as I also come to a stop.
"You just like pissing me off, don't you?" He asks. I shrug with a smile.
"You're kinda hot when you're angry." I say and he shakes his head at me.
"You really mad at me?" I ask as I step closer and place a hand on his chest. "Hmm, big guy? You mad at your girl?"
He grumbles as I let my fingers trace the little dip under his throat of his shirt.
"No." he huffs and I smirk up at him.
"Promise me something?" I ask him and he nods, no questions asked and I smile.
"Work real hard for me out there today...come back to me all sweaty and smelly" I say and he huffs a small laugh.
"I work hard everyday." He says.
"Yeah you do, don't you big guy?" I hum and lick my lips.
"I love watching you come back , your sweat dripping down this big neck" I say and slide my hand up to his neck, curling my fingers behind it.
"I'd rather not have a hard dick when talking to your father Tessa Rae" he grumbles.
"Wanna go to the cabin tonight?" I ask him and he groans and nods.
"Yes. I do." he says and I bite my lip with a grin.
"Good." I say a chomp my teeth and then drop my hand and reach behind him and slap his ass and his eyes widen.
"Cause I wanna sink my teeth into this." I say and he shakes his head.
"You're entirely untamed." He growls at me.
"You gonna tame me?" I cock my brow.
"No, I like you wild." he says and then leans down and kisses my forehead. "Now let me get back to work."
I roll my eyes and sigh. "yeah, yeah, okay" I say and we finish walking up to the house and inside.
"In the office you slow shithead!" My dad calls out when he hears the door and I laugh. Maverick shakes his head at me. I grab his hand when starts to walk away.
"Dont you dare leave me without kissing me first Big Mac." I say and he grumbles.
"Tessa, we're in your house."
"i know where the fuck we are, kiss me" I hiss quietly and he sighs and then grabs my face and I smile as his lips seal themselves on mine and I grab his face too, and part my mouth and slip my tongue over his lips and through them and he groans into my mouth.
Our heads tilt, mouths slanting and tongue pushing back and forth slowly and I moan softly against his mouth, breathing a bit too hard.
He ends the kiss, pecking my mouth once more and then shakes his head at me.
"You're welcome" I say with a wink and he smirks.
"Thank you Tessa Rae" he says and I smile wider and then walk off, looking over my shoulder after a few steps, to find his eyes on my ass. They lift to my face and I wink at him again, before turning my head back around and going to my room.
----------------------------------------
"yeah daddy?" I ask a few hours later when my father knocks on my door calling my name.
"Can I come in?" he asks.
"it's unlocked." I say, sitting on my bed painting my toes.
I smile up at him as he walks into my room and looks around.
"How's your day Daddy?" I ask and he hums, still looking around, letting me know he's probably about to give me a lecture about Maverick. I loved my dad, but he wasnt good at "talks", especially ones that might make him uncomfortable, such as his daughter dating his most trusted ranch hand.
"So...are you and the boy....dating now?" He asks, diving right in.
"Uh huh." I say, pausing to watch him and see his jaw clench slightly.
"I know you're twenty one Tessa, but you're still my little girl, you'll always be my little girl." He says and I slip the brush of my nail polish over the last toe.
"I know." I answer him and he sighs with his whole chest.
"I'll kill him if he hurts you." My dad says and I fight my smile as much as I can as he looks at me.
"no you won't daddy" I say and he grunts and looks away. Because my father loved Maverick. My mother loved Maverick. We all loved him. He was a part of our family in a way that the others weren't, sure we all saw the long time workers as a part of this ranch and extended family, but Maverick was different. My father bonded to him immediately, and while my brother Trey won't admit it, I know he's slightly jealous of it.
"Well he doesnt need to know that." He huffs and I give a little laugh.
"Maverick isn't gonna hurt me." I say and he looks at me and takes another deep sigh.
"Yeah, I know." he says and walks over and sits on the edge of my bed and takes of his cowboy hat and sets it on his knee.
I dig the heels of my feet into the bed and wrap my arms around my legs and rest my chin on my knee.
"What's wrong?" I ask and he looks at me and smiles softly.
"Nothing sweetheart, just getting old." he says and I frown.
"It's hard watching you grow up. It was always hard watching you grow up. Because you never needed me, or your mom." He says and I frown.
"That's not true." I say. "Of course I needed you and mom."
"You know what I mean Tessa, you always did your own thing, took care of yourself...remember that time you fell and scraped your knee, instead of crying and running to me or your mom, you stood up with that little angry face ofyours and threw your middle finger up and cursed at the ground for making you trip.
I smile. It was a memory I didnt remember, but had been told about a handful of times over the years, as well as other similar stories.
"You've always been tough, I never had to worry about you, but I do...I worry Tessa, all the time." He says and I scoot myself beside him.
"I'm fine Daddy, and I'm only tough because of you and mom." I say and lean my head on his shoulder.
"You're brother wasnt tough" he says and I snort a little laugh.
"No, he wasn't was he?" I laugh, because Trey was a whiner and my paretns constantly liked to remind him of it. He of course was better now that he was twenty five, but growing up he was dramatic , for sure.
"I was thinking..." he says. "If you two want to...you could move into the cabin up the mountain." he says and I lift my head and look at him.
"I mean I know you're only starting out....and maybe you dont want that....but, I'd really like to not have to worry about accidentally hearing....things." he says and I hold back my laughter.
"I've been thinking about offering to let Maverick move into it anyhow, give him his own space, give him a break away from those jackasses." He says and I laugh.
"He'd love that. You should ask him." I say and he looks at me.
"I'm askin you." He says.
I smile. "It would mean alot to Maverick if you offered him that cabin. And sure, I can go...up there when need be." I say, watching him wince and I laugh slightly. "But, it would be nice if you gave it to him....he's done a lot for us....hasn't he?" I ask and my father nods. He looks at me, and we both know what I mean. The things they don't talk about with me, or with my mother. The things we know anyways.
"He has." He says.
"I know it would mean alot to him. Offer the cabin to him." I say.
"You sure?" he asks and I nod.
"He deserves his own space. He deserves the show of appreciation for his loyalty." I say and he nods.
"You're a good girl Tessa." he says and grabs my head and kisses my temple.
"And i WILL kill him if he fucks up." he says again and I huff.
"sure you will daddy" I say and lift my chin and kiss his cheek.
He smiles and pats my knee and then stands.
"Daddy?" I ask as he walks to my door, he stops and turns.
"what made you decide to give Maverick your...blessing?" I ask.
"I've watched that boy love you for two years Tessa. Figured it was time put him out of his misery. And you." He says and I smile.
"Daddy?" I call again when he turns, then turns back.
"Yeah sweetheart?" He asks.
"Thank you." I smile at him.
He nods. "As long as he makes you happy, that's all that matters."
I nod.
"Love you." I say and he nods his head.
"Love you too sweetheart." he says and then leaves my room.
