Daddy Gray 01

Gabriel Gray

I open the front door, and can feel the frown of annoyance on my face as my sister knocks. Why the hell would she knock? He has a god damn key to the place.

I scowl even harder as I open the door and find it’s not my sister, but instead some young woman that looks like a kindergarten teacher.

Messy blonde hair , lots of it, piled atop her head haphazardly and a pink bandana fashioned into a headband circles her head.

She’s wearing overalls , light blue with light link hearts painted onto the hips on her pockets and a larger one painted onto the front center of her chest. I scowl as I notice she’s wearing a tiny cropped shirt sleeved pink shirt beneath it. My eyes catch the side of her overalls, the glimpse of tanned on her sides from what her tiny crop top doesn’t cover. My eyes drop down to a pair of pink sneakers with white soles.

“Hi.” She says in a chipper voice. My eyes running back up the five foot four, maybe five foot five overall wearing disruption. Big blue eyes looking back at me, sparkling. A glossy set of plump lips that spread with a smile and bright white, perfectly straight teeth.

“I’m Ally!” She says with excitement that I unfortunately do not reciprocate.

“Whatever you’re selling. I’ll not buying.” I say and start to close the door.

“Oh!” She laughs and then takes a step forward.

“No, I’m Ally” she says and I pause with the door half shut and look at her.

“Congratulations. This is private property Ally, no soliciting.” I say.

Her perfectly arched brows pinch a little.

“I’m Allesandra?” She says and cocks her head. Appearing confused.

“Are you lost, on drugs?” I ask.

“What? No.” She says.

“I’m, Gracie’s friend? Your new assistant or house keeper, or whatever, she wasn’t really clear on the title of the job. But I’m open to calling it whatever you like.” She says with a shrug.

“Excuse me?” I ask her and now I’m more annoyed. My sister Gracie is my assistant and is supposed to be here right now , not one of her little friends.

“Uhhhhh, the job? She said you needed someone to help unpack and situate , do sole cleaning and get you all moved in.” She says and I look her up and down again.

“Gracie is supposed to be doing that.” I say.

“Oh, um, well, I think that will be kind of hard for her to do since she’s currently on a yacht in Santorini.” The girl says.

I grit my teeth and close my eyes and take a deep breath. This is just like Gracie. Shucking all responsibilities to the side. Pawning off the job I offered her to get her to something, anything other than shop till she drops or party all the time.

I lift a hand and pinch the bridge of my nose.

“And exactly how long is my sister going to be in Santorini?” I ask and then sigh and open my eyes.

“Well she said I’d be working for the next few months for you.” She says.

“Months?” I ask.

She nods. “Yup” she pops the p.

“What exactly did my sister ‘hire’ you to do?” I ask and cross my arms and my lips twitch slightly as she mimics my stance and juts out her hip.

“She said you’ve been here for a few months, and have yet to unpack your things. She told me to unpack. Organize. Decorate. Take care of the house and hang out with you.” She says.

My brow lifts. “Hang out with me?”

She shrugs. “Yeah. She said you’re introverted and don’t ever go anywhere and that you need someone to keep you company.”

“I don’t need a babysitter.” I say and grit my teeth.

“Oh thank goodness, because I’m not really down to wipe your ass or anything.” She says .

My eyes widen. “Did you just say….wipe my ass?” I ask.

Her lips curve a little. “I did, and that I’m not doing it.” She says and drops her arms and recrosses them.

“I didn’t ask you to.” I say through my teeth. “I’m perfectly capable of maintaining healthy bathroom habits all by myself.”

“Aww. That’s so good to hear. Good for you. Now that we have that settled. Are you going to let me in?” She asks with a cock of her head. Her pile of blonde hair shifting and lock of hair falling loose and hanging a bit longer than the others.

“No.” I say and look her up and down again.

“Why not?” She now drops her arms and places her hands on her hips.

“I don’t like strangers in my home.” I say through a clenched jaw. I was going to kill Gracie.

“I’m not a stranger. I’m Ally.” She says and sticks out one hand. “Nice to meet you. Sort of. You’re kind of grumpy. But , we’ll work on it.”

I stare at her hand.

“I’m not grumpy.” I huff as my face tightens with a scowl as I look at her hand.

“You sure? Because I’d be willing to bet at Christmas time you throw on a Santa Suit, and tip toe around town and into peoples houses, with your body all green and furry and steal children’s Christmas presents” she says.

“What?” I shake my head.

“The Grinch?” She asks.

“Never seen it.” I say and she drops her mouth open and her big blue eyes widen. Jesus those suckers and big.

“You’ve never seen. The Grinch?” She asks and I shake my head.

“Well then I guess we’ll have to watch it when we hang out.” She shrugs.

“Again, we’re not hanging out. You’re not working here.” I say and I see her playful smile fall.

“Gracie shouldn’t have hired you. I’ll find someone else.” I say and go to turn.

“Wait!” She squeaks and plasters her hand to the door. And I stop. A foot of space left before the door is closed.

“I need this job. She’s doing me a favor.” She says and god damnit. Those big blue puppy dog eyes have me feeling sorry for her.

“Why is she doing you a favor?” I ask and let the door open a little bit again.

She sighs.

“If you MUST KNOW” she says.

“It’s my house, so yes, I must” I say.

“My boy-“ she shakes her head and rolls

Her eyes.

“My EX boyfriend” she corrects herself. “He kicked me out of our apartment last week.”

“So go live with your parents.” I say and her head goes back slightly. I watch her face go sad. Then angry.

“Cemeteries aren’t really great homes,  for the living.” She says.

Fuck. Way to go Gabe.

“Jesus. I’m sorry.” I sigh and open the door more.

Tears well in her pretty eyes and now I’m pissed. Not at her. Not at Gracie. At myself for making this cheery little overall wearing blonde girl with the big blue eyes , cry.

“I…shit. Please. Don’t do that.” I say and feel my chest tighten.

“I don’t want pity, I just want this job.” She sniffs.

“I’m not….im really not comfortable with this.” I say and she nods.

“Yeah, okay.” She says and looks down and away.

“Nice to meet you” she says and turns and scampers off the doorstep and down the stairs.

I’m going to kill Gracie.

“Wait.” I say and she turns and I feel my chest tighten even more with the sight of tears running down her cheeks.

“You have no place to go?” I ask.

She shrugs. “I’ll figure it out.”

Her pretty , happy voice sounds so broken and it’s my fault.  Just let the girl do the damn job.

“Let me guess , Gracie said you could use the guest house here?” I ask and she nods and I sigh.

“Two weeks. Not months. You can stay in the guest house and unpack and set shit up. But I don’t need company. I don’t need someone to hang out with. Two weeks. That’s it. “ I say and she blinks and swipes her tears and nods as she stands at the bottom of the stone steps looking up at me.

“How much did she say I was paying you?” I ask.

“Ten thousand for the summer.” She sniffs. “But obviously if it’s just two weeks, it wouldn’t be that much, so you can-“she speaks and I cut her off.

“Two weeks. Ten thousand.  You do the job. Nothing else. No movie nights or making friendship bracelets.” I say. Because the last thing I need was distractions.

“I’ll give you an extra five thousand to tell my sister I’m a reformed introvert and a ray on sunshine and not at all lonely.” I say.

She blinks.

“I don’t like lying.” She says and sniffs. I sigh.

“An extra ten then.” I say. And her brows pinch.

“You’re not gonna buy my morals.” She says.

My lips twists and then I lick my teeth.

“But I promise I won’t ask you to make friendship bracelets.” She says a little bit of her playfulness returning.

I nod. “Deal.”
